A Maria Montessori Biography - Her Incredible Life

Maria Montessori was born in 1870 in a town called Chiaravalle in the province of Ancona, Italy. Considering the time period in which Maria was raised, she did have some tremendous accomplishments. Back in the 1890s, a woman could not walk in the street alone, write her own check, and basically not do anything without her husband. But Maria Montessori managed to succeed in school, attend college and become the first woman in italy to graduate from medical school. She also made history by being the first female physician in Italy. Later she became a world-renowned educator and psychologist with her research and experimentation in early childhood development. She began the first montessori school in Rome called Casa dei Bambini, or "Children's House." It was there the Montessori method of education first began. During the years between 1907 to mid-1930s, Maria Montessori devoted all of her time and energy to developing schools throughout Europe and North America. She also traveled to India and Sri Lanka in 1947, where she trained thousands of teachers the Montessori curriculum and methodology. In 1913 when Dr Maria Montessori first arrived in America, she was considered to be at the height of her career.

Maria Montessori was a Catholic, so many of her theories are rooted in her spiritual faith. Sometimes, she is referred to as the one who discovered and revealed the qualities of children different from those usually attitributed to them. She knew there was a better way to teach children than what the traditional educational methods offered. Dr Maria Montessori was 81 years old when she died in Noordwijk, Holland in 1952. Her work is still in practice today in montessori schools everywhere.
